Watch Out for the Knives, Dog Food, and Toothpaste

The ten-minute stage play, MADE IN CHINA, written by Jill Murphy Long won and was selected to be the opening performance at the 31st annual Crested Butte Mountain Theatre Playwright Festival.

In following the fragile, yet deep bond between mother and daughter, MADE IN CHINA is about our once protected American world becoming flatter. Sometimes, generational and cultural differences can only be bridged under close inspection to show history is simply repeating itself, in another kitchen, and in another place and time.

This year’s theme required the play to be set within one room and that room being “any kitchen,” be it: mom’s kitchen, a restaurant’s, or even around a campfire. Other challenges each writer faced included a maximum running time of ten minutes and a cast of four or less.

Jill Murphy Long, the playwright of MADE IN CHINA is also an author of several books in the Permission to…book series. Her inspirational books have won awards and are still being reprinted with the first title released in 2002. The author has appeared on CBS and Fox television stations as well as numerous others, and has been interviewed by NPR and hundreds of North American radio stations. National press includes: Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Insider Borders, Redbook, Better Homes & Garden, American West In-flight Magazine, Chicago Sun Times, Dallas Morning News, Philadelphia Daily News, and Orange County Register to name a few.

The author teaches at the Arts for the Soul symposium, a creative camp for adults and has led weekly writers’ groups for years. This prolific writer also pens screenplays and articles on the various topics discussed in her books.

Elizabeth Bond, the director for this play, has also produced and performed in the musical revue, The Dueling Divas, appearing in the U.S. and Europe. Ms. Bond is also an experienced stage and film actress. She appeared in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as a Wizard Woman disguised as a Muggle Mother and makes a brief appearance in the most recent Harry Potter film. In The Bourne Ultimatum, Ms. Bond performed the role of the wife of the Director of the CIA.

After thirty years in London, Ms. Bond became the Managing Director of Crested Butte Mountain Theatre in 2007 and resides in Crested Butte.

There will be only four performances of the ten-minute plays: In the Kitchen showing at the Mallardi Cabaret located at 403 2nd Street in Crested Butte premiering Wednesday, May 21 through Saturday, May 24 at 7:30 pm.
